International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes (ICSBCS)
Bio/Overview
The mission of the International Center for the Study of Breast Cancer Subtypes (ICSBCS) is to reduce the global breast cancer burden through advances in research and delivery of care to diverse populations worldwide. To achieve this mission, the ICSBCS brings together an international consortium of breast cancer clinicians and researchers, all of whom share the goal of addressing variation in breast cancer risk and outcome by studying the genetics of the disease in international patient populations. We have ongoing recruitment across the US, Africa (Nigeria, Ghana, Ethiopia, Uganda), the Caribbean (Antigua, Trinidad, Barbados), Canada, Mexico and Latin America. Our goal is to increase representation of the African diaspora in genetic research, led by a diverse team of multi-ethnic clinicians and scientists. We are poised to make exceptional contributions to breast cancer risk models, therapies and diagnostics.
The ICSBCS acknowledges and respects the reality that this comprehensive genetic research must be firmly rooted in the provision of clinical service- without optimized access to care, breast cancer patients from minority-ethnicity and LMIC communities cannot contribute to the research that is necessary to conquer the disease. The ICSBCS therefore prioritizes the expansion of access to breast cancer research in these populations in the context of efforts that strengthen the quality of care delivered. These joint, interdependent aspirations will be met through outreach and breast health awareness programs in underserved communities as well as capacity-building education and training exchange programs.

What is a virtual walk?
A virtual walk is a symbolic, online community building event. Participants register for the walk and then go for a walk on their own or with a small group of family and friends on the same day and time as other participants but in different locations. To participate, simply register and then take a walk on event day. And if the scheduled day or time are inconvenient, walking on a different day or time still count!
What does it mean to be a virtual walker?
As a virtual walker, you’ll join hundreds of other participants all walking for the same cause, on the same day and roughly the same time but in their own neighborhoods.
Since we can’t all walk together like a traditional walk, we’ll get together virtually on Facebook.com/BlackDoctor.org
